What age can my child start dance class?
If you’re reading this and asking the question, chances are you’ve started to see your child show an interest in dance from an early age.
It could be bopping along to their favorite song, or dancing with a cartoon character they’re watching, or entertaining family members with improvised dance moves. Or it could be as a parent you’re looking for a healthy and confidence-boosting development activity.
With dance, you’ve come to the right place. Dance is a structured and fun activity that anyone can start from a very young age and continue to build and grow skill, talent and ability. Just as important, young dancers can have a lot of fun in a social environment with peers and caring teachers.
At Fresh Coast Dance, we begin dance classes for our youngest dancers who are at least 2 ½ years of age by September 1st, able to stay in class independently and be fully potty trained. We have found that this age reaches the milestones of being able to stay engaged in a full class without the assistance of parents. This helps them build the confidence and skills necessary to learn, grow and take the next steps.
If you’re ready to sign them up, you can find classes for our youngest dancers and all ages on our classes page.
The benefits of a dance foundation
At a recital, it’s always amazing to see the progression of technique, ability and confidence when watching the age groups. The groups of juniors and teens that are wowing the crowd with leaps and turns also started as young as the adorable three-year-old, wide-eyed their first time onstage. It all begins with a foundation.
In classes for our youngest ages, it starts with learning how to learn and setting expectations in a dance class. Our caring dance teachers create a nurturing environment that welcomes young dancers into the fold.
In our first dance classes, children learn how to act and behave in class, how to interact with other dancers, and how to follow directions. They practice and learn simple dance techniques, while also having fun and building relationships.
What’s unique about this setting is it is often some of the first structured classes that children can take. It builds a foundation both for dance, but also any other classroom or extracurricular activities that kids may take. It provides them a leg up in whatever they choose to do on their path.
Can my child start dance at an older age?
Absolutely! There’s no single path to developing in dance, and children take many routes that can include starting dance later or returning to dance after exploring multiple activities.
While many students begin dance at an early age and stick with it, we also welcome children of all ages who want to try out dance, complement other activities or specialize deeper in the sport. (We’ve also taught adults who have tried tap for the first time in their 60s - and love it!)
Some activities also naturally lend themselves to a foundation for dance, including tumbling, gymnastics and theater and performing arts. Some students come to dance later after building a foundation in these or other sports, and thrive by developing their flexibility or stage presence.
We have also seen students who begin early in dance, and then take a break to try other sports, and return to dance older with a well-rounded background.
Overall, getting started early in dance can give families and children options, which may include pursuing multiple sports or specializing in competitive dance and deepening technique when they are older. But just like no two dancers are exactly alike, there is no single starting point to finding your passion in dance.
